Turn a carpet over and the backing tells you more about how it will behave than the pile does. Felt-backed and action-backed are the two you will meet on every UK carpet website, they are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one for a room is the most common mistake we see. This guide explains what each backing is, where each belongs, how each is fitted, and what it does to the price.
The short answer
Felt backing is a soft, cushioned underside that lets a carpet go down without underlay. It is cheaper, quicker to fit and fine for bedrooms, spare rooms and rentals. Action backing is a stiff woven polypropylene that needs underlay and gripper, holds its shape, and is the right choice for stairs, halls, living rooms and anywhere with heavy traffic. Our felt-backed twist is £8.20 per m²; our action-backed ranges run from £8.49 to £15.
Felt backing
A layer of needle-punched synthetic felt bonded to the underside of the carpet. It gives a little cushion, so the carpet feels acceptable laid straight onto boards or a screed. It also makes the carpet flexible, which is why it can be stuck down, loose-laid with double-sided tape, or simply cut to size and tucked in at the edges.
Good for: bedrooms, home offices, spare rooms, rental properties, anywhere you want it down today and may re-carpet in five years.
Not good for: stairs, where it stretches and creeps; hallways, where the softer backing wears through faster; rooms with heavy furniture on castors, which dent it.
Fitting: can be laid without gripper or underlay. Underlay still improves it noticeably; see the underlay guide.
Action backing
A woven polypropylene mesh, sometimes with a secondary layer, that is stiff and dimensionally stable. It does not stretch once fitted, it grips the pins on gripper rod, and it protects the pile from underneath. Action-backed carpet has no cushion of its own and feels hard without underlay.
Good for: stairs and landings, halls, living rooms, family rooms, anywhere that gets walked on all day.
Not good for: a quick, budget re-carpet where you are not fitting underlay, because it will feel thin.
Fitting: gripper rod round the edges, underlay in the middle, carpet stretched onto the gripper with a knee kicker. A room is a DIY job with patience; stairs are a fitter's job.

Hessian backing
The third type you may see, mostly on wool carpet: a natural jute weave. It behaves like action backing (stiff, needs underlay and gripper) but can shrink if it gets wet and is not suited to conservatories or bathrooms. None of our polypropylene ranges use it.
