Action backing is the tougher of the two backings we stock. It is a woven polypropylene layer that resists stretching and stands up to repeated cleaning, which is what you want under heavy furniture or on a staircase.

Put it over underlay on stairs and landings especially — that is where a carpet wears out from beneath rather than on top. The alternative is our hessian backed range.

Yes, for comfort, insulation and wear. Underlay is where most of the softness comes from, and it doubles the life of the carpet on stairs.
