Description
The Recycled Plastic Post 80x80mm is a 3m square post of 100% recycled plastic, flat-cut with no point, at £56.99 each inc. VAT. It is the post for a low composite deck on soil: cut it to length, concrete it in, and bolt the Recycled Plastic Joist 50x100mm to it at 1.2m spacing.
The post does not rot in the ground, is not touched by insects, and needs no treatment, which is where a timber post usually fails first. It is flat-cut at both ends so it sits square in a post hole or on a bracket. The maker notes that in hot or cold weather the size may change by up to 1.5 percent, so leave that allowance at fixings. For a raised deck, balustrade posts or a hot tub base use the 100x100mm post at £77.99 instead.
Cut the 3m length into the number of posts your layout needs; three 1m posts from one length is typical for a low deck. Pre-drill before bolting joists on. The post-and-joist layout for a deck on soil is in our composite decking subframe guide, and the board fixing method in how to install composite decking. Budget £350 to £450 in joists, posts and brackets for a 3.6m by 3m deck. The full range is on the composite decking framework page. Delivery is 2 to 4 working days, free over £190.

Common questions
- How many 80x80mm posts do I need for a 3.6m by 3m deck?
Posts go at 1.2m spacing along each supporting run, so a 3.6m run needs four posts and a 3m run three. Count them from your joist layout rather than the deck area. For a low deck each post is short, and one 3m length cuts into three posts of up to 1m. Budget £350 to £450 for joists, posts and brackets at this size.
- Should I choose 80x80mm or 100x100mm posts?
80x80mm is right for a low deck, where the posts are mostly below ground and only carry the joists. Choose the 100x100mm post at £77.99 for a raised deck with longer exposed posts, for balustrade posts, or under a hot tub. Both are flat-cut recycled plastic and take the same 50x100mm joist.
- Can the recycled plastic post be concreted into the ground?
Yes. Set it in a post hole with concrete around it as you would a timber post. The difference is that it will not rot at ground level or wick water, so there is no need for a gravel sump or preservative. Keep the post plumb while the concrete sets and allow for the 1.5 percent movement at bolt holes.
- Why does the post have no point?
A pointed post is for driving into soft ground with a mallet. These posts are meant to be set in dug holes with concrete or on brackets, where a flat end sits square and gives full bearing. Cut the 3m length to your post heights with a hand or circular saw; it cuts like hardwood.
